McLeod Residence Presents a Curatorial Collaboration
Two Guest Curators Show Their Stuff in February
SEATTLE, WA--January 16, 2008--McLeod Residence is pleased to collaborate with two different curators for its February exhibits. Encausticated, curated by Megan Woo, is a showcase of artists working with encaustic paintings and mixed-media works. The Possibility is a photography exhibit by Shoot for Change and is organized by local youth mentoring program Community for Youth. Sales of the photography will benefit Community for Youth. In addition, Cait Willis will show her roller derby paintings. All exhibitions will open Friday, February 8, from 6-9pm and run through March 29, 2008. The opening will feature a performance by local musician Levi Fuller at 8pm.
Encausticated is a collection of work by six Seattle-area artists creating encaustic paintings and mixed-media pieces that explore a range of subjects, from sex and weather, surfaces and skins and the cliches of love and romance. Encaustic is a process of painting with hot wax that has been colored with pigments. Because the wax may be applied to a surface in a thin glaze or a thick impasto and subsequently carved or molded, encaustic work can take on many forms. The pieces in Encausticated range from delicate to boldly sculptural. The artists include Pat Bako, Linda Beaumont, Kamla Kakaria, Janet Miller, Jean Prominski and Travis Talburt.
McLeod Residence member Megan Woo has worked locally with artists for many years. A former gallery manager at Traver Gallery, she is now a web developer, creating web sites for many local artists. Megan began collecting encaustic work when she was 21 and received a piece from artist and family friend Linda Beaumont, who is known in Seattle for her public artworks. When approached by McLeod Residence to guest curate, Megan immediately knew she wanted to put together an encaustic exhibit.
The Possibility is a collection of black and white and color photographs by Walter Grio, who works under the moniker Shoot for Change. The photographs will appear in the McLeod light boxes and on the foyer walls. Shoot for Change donates all proceeds from sales of photography to a charitable organization. Walter created his photography business after he posted some photographs to his web site and was approached by several people interested commissioning portraits. A successful software consultant, Walter didn't need the income as a photographer and decided to donate all the money from his photoshoots to a charitable organization. Money from the sales of photographs from The Possibility benefit Community for Youth, a not-for-profit mentoring organization that creates communities of support at Rainier Beach, Cleveland and Chief Sealth high schools. Each year 170 high school students participate in Community for Youth's mentoring program.
Cait Willis will also exhibit a series of roller derby paintings in the McLeod Room through March 9, 2008.
