Happy Birthday, McLeod Residence!

McLeod Residence celebrates its first anniversary with video quilts, high-tech textiles and 3D Photography

SEATTLE, WA--December 13, 2007--Mcleod Residence celebrates its first anniversary with an exhibit featuring three artists who work with traditional subjects in nontraditional ways. The anniversary party and exhibit opening will feature a special musical performance by Cynthia Norton, an artist exploring the boundaries between domestic crafts and new media, to coincide with the opening of her video quilt installation Apple Suckling Tree. Also showing during January is an interactive textile grid by USA Fellow Maggie Orth and a stereoscopic photography installation by Ingrid Schultz. The one-year anniversary party and performance of Apple Suckling Tree takes place on Friday, January 4, 2008, from 6--9pm. The exhibits run through February 2, 2008.

In its first year, McLeod Residence has exhibited over fifty artists, including many working in the emerging field of technology-driven art. Proprietors Buster and Lele McLeod want to create a space for artists working with technology, and their anniversary exhibit fulfills this goal with three artists working with traditional subjects and materials, such as quilts, textile art and landscape photography, in nontraditional ways, utilizing video technology, multimedia installations and high-tech materials.

Apple Suckling Tree is a “video quilt” installation in the Parlor that consists of a central sculpture of a bed and a mattress. The quilt itself is a video loop that is projected through a kaleidoscope lens onto the bed, featuring artist Cynthia Norton playing music under the guise of her performance personae Ninnie Näive, a character based on the classic country genre of the rube in the vein of Minnie Pearl or String Bean.  In the video, Ninnie plays instruments of her own making interspersed with voracious apple eating and apple accompaniment.

The bed frame is sculpted from apple wood and has the lyrics from Bob Dylan’s Apple Suckling Tree burned into it. Other sculptural aspects include shrunken apple head dolls and a flat-screen monitor showing more footage of Ninnie performing with apples. The piece draws upon the domestic and agricultural traditions of Cynthia’s Kentucky upbringing, but plays with the traditional boundaries of craft and folk art by being executed in an entirely new way.

On January 4 as part of the exhibit opening and anniversary festivities, Ninnie will throw a release party for her album Queen of Cups, and will perform in the McLeod Residence foyer with her handmade instruments and apples.

Cynthia Norton began experimenting with video, kinetic sculpture and performance  at University of Kentucky and continued her exploration  in graduate school at The Art Institute of Chicago while creating her character of Ninnie Näive. Since then, she has continued to mix traditions and media while focusing on her southern heritage.

The Conservatory will feature Fuzzy Light Wall, an electronic textile piece by United States Artist fellow Maggie Orth. Commissioned by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Fuzzy Light Wall  is a an interactive light grid with a variety of fuzzy electronic textile sensors.  Viewers create their own dynamic patterns by touching the sensors, which activates lights behind the sensors. As the lights dim on and off, different patterns and colors are revealed or hidden.

Considered a pioneer in the emerging field of electronic textiles, interactive fashions, wearable computing and interface design, Maggie Orth has published and exhibited in a range of venues worldwide, including several shows at McLeod Residence. In November 2007, Maggie was named a United States Artist Fellow and received an unrestricted $50,000 grant. United States Artists is a new organization that exists to support, nurture and strengthen the work of America's finest living artists.

Schultz_01 Showing in the Lions closet will be Ingrid Schultz’s Seasonal Therapy, a 3D photography cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder, an affliction that many Seattleites become familiar with during dark winter months.

Ingrid was inspired to create Seasonal Therapy after a particularly grim winter several years ago as a sort of DIY cure for the winter blues. The installation will turn the closet into a miniature summer sanctuary and will include 3D viewers with reels of sunny, summery moments and a tiny spot of turf on the ground where the viewer can relax while they look through the viewfinders. More than usual 2D photographs, the stereoscopic images create a sensory experience that thrusts the viewer into the captured moment, giving the the sense of being able to actually touch or be a part of the image.

Ingrid Schultz has been creating stereoscopic photography for over five years. An avid collector of obscure Viewmaster reels, Ingrid was compelled to learn how to make her own 3D images.
