Celebrating Seattle’s Past and Present Superstars
‘Notables’ Lead All-New Exhibit Rotation at McLeod Residence

SEATTLE  —  February 8, 2007 —  Seattle Notables, a multimedia project celebrating famous figures of Seattle, leads an all-new rotation of exhibits opening at McLeod Residence in March. High-tech textiles, an interactive music installation, recycled neon art and paintings by 20th century Northwest Masters will also be unveiled at an opening on March 2, 2007, from 5 - 9pm. The exhibits will be on display until April 30.

McLeod Residence, a new concept of art and gathering space in Seattle, is located in a former apartment building and retains many residential characteristics, including five separate rooms that allow curator Lele McLeod to host artists working in very different media simultaneously. The mix of exhibits opening in March seems eclectic, but they all share a common point of origin — the Pacific Northwest. One of the goals of Lele and cofounder Buster McLeod is to expose and encourage both emerging and established artists in Seattle, particularly those mixing technology and art.

“Seattle is such a tech-friendly town, and lots of artists are using technology in interesting ways,” said Lele Mcleod, “but there aren’t any galleries here with a strong focus on the intersection between computers and art. We're really interested in carving a niche for both local artists working with programming, and programmers creating art."

Leading the March exhibits is Seattle Notables, a multimedia celebration of the famous, or at least noteworthy, Seattleites that we all recognize and hold dear in our hearts, whether they are an award-winning actor or a gentleman who has occupied the same Seattle street corner for years. The project features an exhibit of seven large-scale photographs by local photographer Adam Weintraub, who is known for capturing familiar faces of the music and nightlife scene. The photographs will be mounted on lightboxes in the South Room and they will also available for purchase as prints on paper.

Seattle Notables will also include coasters featuring the work of local photographers, a Notables painting exhibit curated by Laurie Kearney of Ghost Gallery, and a web site where users can report their own Notables sightings and even upload photographic evidence. More details will be announced on February 16, after all the artists involved have been notified.

The McLeod Residence Member Room will feature an installation by Maggie Orth of International Fashion Machines, her local company that creates interactive electronic textiles. Maggie’s work juxtaposes the more masculine world of technology with the traditionally feminine realm of fabric arts. Bullseye 1 and Moving Target are pieces of programmable fabric woven with an electronic circuit and printed with Thermochromic ink. When current is sent through certain parts of the textile, resistive yarns in the fabric heat up and the ink responds by changing color. The artist is able to program certain parts of the fabric to change colors at different intervals, creating changeable patterns on a static canvas.

Petal-Pusher SuperLux Dimmer is a tufted wall dimmer switch with patented textile sensors. The user is able to dim the lights just by touching the soft panel on the front. The tactile, fuzzy sensors transform the way we interact with something as cold as a light switch.

The Conservatory will contain another interactive multimedia installation by local musician and artist Paul Rucker, entitled Project 12: Untitled, Three Lasers. Rucker, who won the Seattle Music Awards' 2005 Jazz Artist of the Year, as well as the Golden Ear 2005 Emerging Artist of the Year, created the project from his book of over sixty ideas for interactive audio visual pieces. Untitled, Three Lasers involves a set of lasers encased in a glass box full of smoke. Three holes cut into the glass allow participants to interact and break the beams, each of which are associated with a musical composition.

Jeremy Bert has created a sculpture installation of recycled and altered neon signage for McLeod’s Lounge.  Ransom Note is a message assembled from letters collected from abandoned signage, and is a reminder of Seattle’s dwindling tradition of eclectic neon landmarks. Jeremy, originally from Billings, Montana is a licensed sign electrician, certified welder, and crane operator in Seattle, specializing in installation of electric signs and large-scale lighting.

In a nod to those who paved the way for local innovative art, Seattle art dealer Jay Franklin will create an installation in the Parlor room with Northwest Modern Masters. The exhibit will show the work of artists of the Pacific Northwest, ranging from the 1930s to the 1960s.  Northwest Modern Masters will include paintings by Morris Graves, Mark Tobey and Richard Gilkey, as well as a very rare early piece by Chuck Close.
