Seattle’s Most Recognizable Figures Take Over McLeod Residence in March
SEATTLE—February 15, 2007—You’ve seen them on the television, on the sidewalk downtown, in your favorite neighborhood bar. They are the reoccurring characters that color daily life in our city: Seattle Notables! McLeod Residence, an art and gathering space in Belltown, celebrates famous faces of Seattle with Seattle Notables, a multi-media project opening with a reception March 2, 2007, from 5pm - 9pm. McLeod Residence will also host a Seattle Notables costume party on March 9, 2007, beginning at 8pm.
We can all name a few obvious Notables off the top of our head--Bill Gates, Gov. Gregoire, Paul Allen, John Curly. The concept of Seattle Notables is to honor these figures who put our city on the map alongside the recognizable faces we see everyday—ones who often play a greater role in making our everyday existence more interesting, like Juan the Frye Apartment Guy who has occupied the same downtown street corner for years in protest, or Murray the Bartender who soothes our harried souls with the best cocktails in town.
Seattle Notables will take over several of McLeod Residence’s multiple rooms. Adam L. Weintraub leads the exhibits with a series of seven photographs mounted on lightboxes in the South Room. Adam is known for capturing familiar faces of the music, art and nightlife scenes, as evidenced in his portraits of Dina Martina with El Vez, William H. Gates, Sr. and Mimi Gates, Dan Savage, and McLeod Residence’s own Chris Weber dressed as Dale Chihuly. Adam’s photographs will be available for purchase both in editions mounted on lightboxes and printed on paper.
Several photographs by renowned Seattle photographer Alice Wheeler will be hung in the foyer. Alice’s portraits of Kurt Cobain and the band Nirvana poignantly capture one of Seattle’s most well-known pop culture icons. Alice Wheeler’s work appears courtesy of Greg Kucera Gallery.
Laurie Kearney of Ghost Gallery will curate an exhibit of Seattle Notable paintings in the McLeod Room, including images of SuttonBeresCuller, FanKick!, Rat City Roller Girls, Sally Brock, Regina Hackett and Ben Lashes. Laurie established Ghost Gallery in 2006 and describes it as a “movable exhibition project.” As the name implies, Ghost Gallery has no physical presence—instead, Laurie connects with different venues around Seattle to exhibit artwork by emerging local artists.
McLeod Residence will also sell Notables tile coasters as part of the project, featuring pictures of Notables taken by several local photographers. For $6.50, you may have the honor of setting your drink on Adé, the Mariner Moose, the Pet Squirrel Guy, The Stranger’s David Schmader and Christopher Frizzelle, Joe Randazzo dressed as Jerri Blank or McLeod Residence’s favorite nine-year old Jetpack McLeod, among others. Coasters will be available for purchase at McLeod Residence or www.mcleodresidence.com.
Finally, McLeod Residence will launch a Seattle Notables web site on March 2, 2007, that allows everyone to participate in the appreciation and celebration of notableness. At seattlenotables.com, users can read about Notable sightings, report their own sightings, upload photographic evidence and track Notables on an interactive map.
To kick off the Notables project, McLeod Residence will host a costume party on March 9, 2007, beginning at 8pm. Guests are required to come dressed as their favorite Notable, and costumes will be judged by notorious Seattle band The Lashes. Tickets are $15, including drink tickets, and are available through brownpapertickets.com.
In addition to Seattle Notables, an installation of electronic textiles pieces Bullseye 1, Moving Target and Petal-Pusher SuperLux Dimmer by Maggie Orth of International Fashion Machines; a sculpture made of recycled and altered neon signs by Jeremy Bert entitled Ransom Note; and Northwest Modern Masters, an exhibit of Pacific Northwest artists from the 1930s to the 1960s curated by J. Franklin that includes a rare early work by Chuck Close will open on March 2.
